Coinbase Launches Agentic Wallets on Base Network

Coinbase has launched Agentic Wallets on its Base layer-2 network. AI agents can now handle financial transactions autonomously. No human approval needed for each action.

The move positions Coinbase at the center of something massive. McKinsey projects agentic commerce will hit $3-5 trillion by 2030. AI agents conducting financial operations independently. Entirely on their own.

The new wallet infrastructure gives AI agents real autonomy. They can hold funds, send payments, trade tokens, earn yield. All onchain. All without human intervention, according to Coinbase.

Developers can spin up wallets in minutes. There’s a command-line tool with pre-built capabilities. Authentication, funding, sending, trading, earning functions. All ready to go.

The wallets feature gasless transactions on Base. Programmable spending limits. Secure enclaves for private keys. Plus automatic know-your-transaction screening to block risky interactions.

Here’s the key component: native support for x402. That’s Coinbase’s open payment protocol. It embeds stablecoin payments directly into HTTP requests. Agents can browse the x402 Bazaar. Discover paid APIs and services. Pay for them autonomously.

The protocol’s already processed over 50 million transactions. Cloudflare co-founded a foundation to standardize it. According to Coinbase.

Major payment companies are building parallel infrastructure. Google, Visa, PayPal, American Express. All of them. Google’s integrating x402 into its AP2 agent payments protocol.

“Agentic Wallets represent a pivotal step in the evolution of autonomous financial systems,” Coinbase stated in its announcement.

The practical applications? DeFi agents automatically rebalancing yields across protocols. Research bots paying per article or query. AI creators monetizing their output while covering operational costs. Agents hiring and paying each other for services. No human intermediation.

Coinbase is betting stablecoins will become the preferred medium for machine-to-machine payments. The advantages: instant, programmable, borderless settlement. Better than traditional credit card rails for tiny, frequent automated transactions.

The exchange is positioning itself as foundational infrastructure. For the emerging agent economy. Even as the broader crypto market faces ongoing regulatory uncertainty.

Discovery tools remain limited. Trust frameworks for autonomous agents holding funds are still undeveloped. But the foundational infrastructure? It’s rapidly taking shape.
